But with home improvement, the “fakery” can lead to a different set of consequences. For example:
- Unrealistic budgets: many of the quotes given in the cost of a renovation are specific to a region of the country…and sometimes, to Canada. If you live in New York City, for example, don’t expect to find an apartment – let alone a house – for anything less than $500,000. To expect a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with an open concept kitchen for $250,000 in New York City is not only laughable, it’s unrealistic.
- Condensed timelines: it’s amazing how contractors get a whole house renovation done in 44 minutes (16 minutes are for commercials). The reality, however, is one that will feature unexpected setbacks, permit issues, deadlines not being met, and unforeseen expenses that will make a “six week renovation” seem like a dream come true…one that cannot possibly be met in many cases.
